Introduction

Micro Seven Model CL10, PC-Internal Telephone Line (C.O.) Simulator, is an ISA card that is plugged into PC's empty slot, and it provides two simulated C.O. telephone line. The CT10's simulated telephone characteristics are programmable by PC, and the programmed parameters are saved to computer's disk drive as a unique telephone line condition for later retrieval. The CL10's Programming Software also provides a simple digital signal-processing mode (DSP mode) that stores and reads digitized signals at line 1 and 2. The satellite delay of signals between line 1 and 2 is the application of the DSP circuit mode. A switching circuit may be selected among analog, digital, and DSP circuits. In analog circuit mode, the time-division multiplexing circuit is switched off, and all signal switching is done in analog circuit unlike digital circuit mode. The DSP circuit mode is a circuit where signals are converted to digital value and processed by PC in a special digital circuit. The model CL10 creates an environment for an integrated test station where modem, fax, and telephone products are located in a computer and tested with internal telephone line simulators. A line monitor by CL10 Programming Software is enabled to display dialed numbers and line activities. The programmable parameters include telephone numbers, ring-signal frequency, battery-feed voltage (loop voltage), line impairment mode, analog/digital/DSP circuit, call progress tone, PBX mode, disconnect signal, network delay, stutter dial-tone, and caller-ID parameters. The CL10 generates ring signal and battery-feed voltage from PC's main power supply. The call-progress tone is selected between dual-frequency and single-frequency tones. The battery-feed voltage is selected between 20 and 40V. The ring signal is a fixed-amplitude sine wave with programmable frequency. The caller-ID programmable parameters in single/multiple message formats are caller-ID names, private/out-of-area, names, and visual message display. The caller-ID date and time are same as computer's setting. The caller-ID on Call Waiting is only available in analog circuit mode. The CL10 also contains line-impairment mode with extra insertion losses and random noise added for long-distance telephone lines. All the programmable parameters may be saved as a file in computer for future loading. When the computer is powered up and CL10 software is run, the last saved parameters may be automatically loaded. The CL10 is also equipped with a forced-disconnect feature where disconnect signals are sent to calling and called lines. Programmable network response delay simulates time delay after completion of dialing. Simulated PBX mode returns dial tone after dialing 9. The secondary call progress tone generates a single-frequency tone instead of dual-frequency call progress tone. The programmable disconnect signal changes duration of the disconnect-signal. Custom software that provides digitization of signals, custom display, other special application of model CL10 for various telephone functions may be available.

A low-cost version, model CL10-C is also available without caller-ID, digital circuit, DSP circuit, programming of battery-feed, random noise, and PC interface.

Specifications:

Note on Programming: When the CL10 Software is run, all programming by dialing numbers at lines and test-tones generation are disabled.

Switching Circuit: analog, digital, or DSP- Programmable by CL10 Software

Analog circuit: time-division multiplex circuits are turned off, and signal switching between two simulated telephone lines is done by analog circuits. Enabled by Programming-by-Dial, 0#252*016* with dual-frequency call progress tones, non-PBX mode, and non-Hot Line mode.

Digital circuit: Signals at line1 and 2 are converted digital form, and output after switching back to analog form. Power-up default condition.

DSP circuit: same as digital circuit, but the converted digital value is stored in computer's memory for later retrieval.

Warning:

When the DSP circuit is run, all interrupt requests are turned off in the computer. The CL10 software must be run under DOS mode.

Dialing:

Telephone numbers, programmable by CL10 Software:

1. Primary telephone number: selected by Programming-by-Dial 043 or factory default: line 1 or 2.

2. Secondary telephone number: selected by Programming-by-Dial 044

The number is same as calling number in caller-ID with its length programmable. The first digit must not start with "0" for stand-alone mode.

DTMF dialing signal power: -13dBm to +5dBm per a frequency with no more than 4dB difference between frequencies.

DTMF dialing detection time: 45 ms

Pulse dialing: Break period: 45 to 75 ms (60 ms nominal), make period: 30 to 60 ms (40 ms nominal)

Simulated PBX Mode, Programmable by CL10 Software:

The following dialing enables the simulated PBX mode where dial tone returns after dialing 9:

Programming-by-Dial 0#252*004* with dual frequency call progress tone and 0#252*012* with secondary call progress tone.

The regular dialing methods work as well here. For example, if the secondary dialing method with a telephone number of 3456789012and the PBX mode are enabled, dialing of 3456789012 or 93456789012 would ring the other line. To return to non-PBX mode, dial Programming-by-Dial 0#252*000* or dial 0#252*008* with secondary call progress tone.

Line characteristics:

Input impedance at 1 k Hz: 600 ohms +/- 5%

Signal Bandwidth: 150 HZ to 3.5 k HZ

Line impairment mode, programmable by CL10 Software:

When a number of Programming-by-Dial 00 and line-number is dialed, line impairment circuit with additional 20dB of insertion loss and -55dBm of random noise are added to signals between line 1 and 2. After this line impairment mode is programmed in, the primary or secondary dialing method will not affect this line impairment mode. Signal power of random noise is also programmable.

Random noise amplitude programming: Programmable by CL10 Software or Programming-by-Dial 0#168*nnn*

The random noise amplitude is set at –55 dBm as a factory default value, but it may be changed by the above dialing method. The factory default value is obtained with nnn=011. The smaller number, the lower signal power.

i.e. –31 dBm for nnn= 176, -37 dBm for nnn=088, -43 dBm for nnn=044, -49 dBm for nnn=022, -61 dBm for nnn=005, -67 dBm for nnn=000.

Non-impairment mode. Programmable by CL10 Software:

When Programming-by-Dial 09 and a line number is dialed, the insertion loss between lines becomes only 1 dB, and the random noise is removed. This is the factory default condition.

Battery-feed voltage (loop voltage), Programmable by CL10 Software:

Selection between -20 or -40 volts:

1. -20 volts mode is selected by dialing Programming-by-Dial 041, and it is the factory default condition.

2. -40 volts mode is selected by dialing Programming-by-Dial 042. The battery-feed voltage is changed to -20 volt mode when called line is ringing or in its off-hook state (answered). When the called line hangs up the line, the battery-feed voltage is returned to -40 volts.

Ring Signal, Programmable by CL10 Software:

20 +/- 2% Hz sine wave on power-up, but the frequency is set by CL10 Software. Normally 2 sec on 4 sec off with exception of distinctive ringing features programmed by Programming-by-Dial method.

Amplitude: 67V RMS into open circuit. It is 66 V RMS into RN=0.1, 56 V RMS into RN=0.5, 48V RMS into RN=1, and 40V RMS into RN=1.7.

Note: According to the FCC-part 68 rule, the RN=7000/(equivalent resistive value in ohms) for ring signal of 20Hz +/- 3%.

Distinctive ring signal features: (Programming not available with CL10 Software)

The following distinctive ringing pattern is enabled instead of standard 2 sec on/ 4 sec off ringing pattern:

(a). Dialing Programming-by-Dial 0 * 1 + (line number): 2 sec on/ 4 sec off (default condition)

(b). Dialing Programming-by-Dial 0 * 2 + (line number): 0.8 sec on, 0.4 sec off, 0.8 sec on, 4 sec off

(c). Dialing Programming-by-Dial 0 * 3 + (line number): 0.4 sec on, 0.2 sec off, 0.4 sec on, 0.2 sec off, 0.8 sec on, 4 sec off

(d). Dialing Programming-by-Dial 0 * 4 + (line number): 0.3 sec on, 0.2 sec off, 1 sec on, 0.2 sec off, 0.3 sec on, 4 sec off

Busy Tone: 480 Hz + 620 Hz, 0.5 sec ON/0.5 sec OFF.

Accuracy in frequency component: +/- 1%.

Secondary Call Progress Tones, Programmable by CL10 Software:

Dialing Programming-by-Dial 07 enables the secondary call progress tones. Instead of generating dual frequency call progress tones, single-frequency tone of 480 Hz is produced with signal power of –18.5 dBm. Dialing 07 switches back to the dual frequency call progress tones.

Stutter dial tone, Programmable by CL10 Software:

Dialing Programming-by-Dial 046 enables stutter dial tone with three of 0.1 seconds on/off period following with continuous dial tone.

Dialing Programming-by-Dial 045 disables the stutter dial tone. It is a factory default condition.
